EMG: Sun Rose, Sun Plant, Table Rose

Do you have a space in your balcony which receives some sunlight. Would you like to add a wonderful array of colors to the garden with minimum effort. Would you like to keep the plant small and tidy and would you like this color to just pop up every day. Well then one of the best choices for you would be the Sun rose or table rose. I am still trying to confirm if the correct name for these are Helianthemums. This plant grows very well in regular or hanging pots. They do not need very big pots to grow as they do not spread their roots very much. They toil everyday and produce flowers which bloom during the day and close by evening. Next day a fresh bunch will bloom. You can find them in different colors orange, red, pink, magenta and accordingly decorate your garden with them. They are not very fussy about water requirements and definitely prefer being watered less than over watering. Use soil with sufficient drainage and do not allow the base to be wet or retain water. Make sure these folks get sunshine for a couple of hours and your balcony will be filled with radiant colors.  The flowers are small, about a couple of centimeters in diameter but the density is what really adds the color.  You can plant them in groups in the same pot to compliment each other too. I have noticed that weeds grow profusely in pots with these plants and casues degradation in plant quality over time. Carefully deweed the pot and add some flowering agent monthly if you think the density of flowers are going down. A definite addition to the Easy Maintenance Garden (EMG). Some pictures from my collection of these plants.

Nice! I don't know how you manage this...mine just remain without flowering or get some nasty bug and die out. I've been thoroughly unlucky with these :(

Hi! Its is known as portulaca here in Oz. It is EMG! Heat tolerant and love the sun very much.

Rightly said, these portulacas (thas what they are called) are one of the simplest/easisest plants to grow in any garden. they add such beauty with their tiny flowers... you do have a lovely collection of these little beauties!

Hello! Those are nice, colorful flowers. I like your concept of EMG!

Malathi,
Do you place them in sunlight. Use Neem oil 3%(3ml in 1 litre water regularly) that should take care of the bugs...

Malay-Kadazan girl, Good Earth,
Thanks for pointing out the name. I am trying to find more colors and see if I can group plant them.

Bom,
Thank you for visiting. I follow you on reader regularly. I am trying to get more folks to know that gardening is not a difficult activity. That is the reason I started the series. That gardens are not only about roses etc. Hopefully more people find out about easy to maintain gardens and set up plants at home. If someone is interested I would definitely like to help them set it up too

Hi Natti,
how do you ensure proper drainage for the plants in hanging pots? do u bring the pots down, water them & hang them back?

Natti said...

Hi GoodEarth,
I usually do not overwater the hanging pots. I do not like the water to leak out from under the bottom as it would probably fall on lower floors. Once every couple of weeks, I bring it down and water it thoroughly and the rest of the times, I just water it to keep the soil from drying.

i always used to wonder how ppl manage to water plants in hanging pots. Thanks for the clarification :)

I was curious if you ever considered changing the structure of your blog?
Its very well written; I love what youve got to say. But maybe you could a little more in
the way of content so people could connect with
it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having one or 2 pictures.
Maybe you could space it out better?

Hi All,

I have a Question, so please reply

Does it grow from cuttings?

Natti said...

I have plucked out some plants and they successfully rooted. Happened once, so am not sure if this is a repeatable process.

I'm having a table rose... a beautiful peachy color.
I've been watering them on alternative days and keep it in a well sunny area. It bloomed just once, and then all the buds fell off before blooming. Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong.
